YOUTH INVOLVEMENT AT CALDER
Junior Jockey Club Program
Junior Jockey Club is designed to educate youth in fun ways about horses and racing through educational events. Membership is free and each child can access a free online monthly newsletter highlighting events and fun horse-related information. The online newsletter also contains a monthly column by Thunder & Lightning, our mini horse mascots. Currently there are 2,000 JJC members, with some as far away as the Bahamas, Canada and Germany.
When you come to the track, visit our Junior Jockey Club Clubhouse, located on the first floor. The Clubhouse features cut-outs for photo opportunities with a great jockey and horse, jockey and jockette, and even our track bugler. Displays feature Mini Mascot (our mini horses that are the mascots) memorabilia (their first blanket and shoes), a model of the racetrack designed by middle school students, and an inside look at the jockey’s room. Posters feature the parts of a horse, colors of horses and the skeletal structure of horses. You can learn a lot.
2008 JUNIOR JOCKEY CLUB PROGRAMS - To be announced, pending building work.
Parents and Guardians to receive notification of upcoming JJC events, please e-mail JUNIOR JOCKEY CLUB
2008 FAMILY DAYS - Due to the Family Day area (Picnic Grove) being taken offline, there are no Family Days scheduled for the Picnic Grove for 2008 at this time. Two Festivals are scheduled - the Horse Fair on Festival of the Sun day in October and the Florida Fair on Florida Million Day in November, located track-side in The Park. These days will feature activities for kids including shows, exhibits and activities. Both run 11:30 am to 5 pm. Due to the limited space, there will not be pony rides.
Calder's Official Mini Mascots, Thunder & Lightning
In 2000, Calder Race Course introduced its miniature horse mascots, affectionately known as "Mini Mascots," to racetrack fans. A little more than two feet tall, the "minis" are part of Calder's program to introduce people to the sport of horse racing. By observing these tiny replicas of larger horses, visitors to Calder can fully appreciate the allure of the horse in general.
Girl Scout Programs
Girl Scouts of all ages can earn their horse-related badges with our special half-day programs, designed specifically for Scouts. Tours tailored from Daisies to Seniors.
Youth Tours
See the racehorses and jockeys as they prepare for a race, enjoy the pageantry of the post parade and the beautiful flowers in the Paddock where jockeys board their mounts. Plus, book your Birthday Party here too!
Internship Program
Calder Race Course offers internships in which interns assist the marketing department with promotional events, activities and programs in a customer service based environment. We provide a relaxed and fun learning environment so students can learn new skills and enhance their current skills.
