Jockey Manoel Cruz has won three of the first four races at the Festival of the Sun at Calder Casino & Race Course on Saturday, including the first stakes event of the day, the $64,550 Birdonthewire Stakes aboard Maurice Miller's 2-year-old homebred colt Uno Caliente for trainer Bill White.

Uno Caliente defeated Determinato by length, covering the six furlongs in 1:13.20.  It was another length and a half back to Brock N Rock in third.

At the mutuel windows, Uno Caliente paid $4.00, $3.00, and $2.60.  Determinato returned $10.40 and $6.80, while Brock N rock paid $9.60 to show.

Winning trainer's quotes:

Bill White - "He cut out fast fractions and was asked for his best all the way to the wire with that other horse (Determinato) still coming. He set fast fractions in his last start, but that was seven-eighths and the speed was not doing very well that day. I think he's really best the first five-eighths and I'm looking to try him that distance on turf at some point."

Winning jockey's quotes:

Manoel Cruz  - "I'm off to a good start-three wins already and I'm sure I'll get some more.  This horse (Uno Caliente) broke sharp and showed the way.  All I had to do was drive.  He was very good today.  He relaxed a little in front and turned it on for the stretch.  The second place horse (Determinato) was never a problem."
