Henco, Inc. & Four Horsemen Racing Stable's 3-year-old colt Tannersville edged out Bim Bam in a tight photo finish of the $75,000 Calder Derby at Calder Casino & Race Course's Festival of the Sun on Saturday. The official margin of victory was a nose.
It was a thrilling stretch duel between the two colts and their jockeys, Wilmer Galviz aboard Tannersville and Eibar Coa on Bim Bam. Tannersville's winning time was 1:49.32 for the 1 1/8 miles on turf labeled good. It was three lengths back to Saint Dynaformer in third.
Tannersville is trained by his co-owner, Henry Collazo. The colt paid $7.20, $3.20, and $2.60 at the mutuel windows. He earned $44,175 for the victory.
Winning trainer's quotes:
Henry Collazo - "That was breath-taking! They (Tannersville and Bim Bam) fought to the wire. I knew he was good horse from the first time I worked him, but I still have to keep pinching myself to make sure it's real. He's a push-button horse and laid back, but still goes out and puts on a performance like that. Bim Bam is so tough, but he better watch out-Tannersville is the new shooter."
Winning jockey's quotes:
Wilmer Galviz - "When it comes to grass racing around here, this horse is as good as there is. He never runs a bad race on the turf. It was a very close finish, but when we hit the wire, I knew we won it. I won't go as far as saying I knew before the wire, but at the wire I did."
