Summit of Speed, Thoroughbred Racing's Fastest Day, Returns to Calder July 7

Calder Casino & Race Course will present the 13th annual Summit of Speed program on Saturday July 7, a high-octane afternoon that will feature some of the fastest thoroughbreds in the land competing in six stakes worth $1.3 million in purses, including the centerpiece event of the Calder Meet, the Grade 1 $400,000 Princess Rooney Handicap, and the Grade 2 $400,000 Smile Sprint Handicap, a Breeders’ Cup Challenge Win and You’re In Race.

In addition to a day of fast-paced action on the track, with food and drink specials throughout the building, guests attending the Summit of Speed program will be treated to an autograph session with the local jockey colony, a free color photo of the jockey colony while supplies last, and a jockey foot race to take place on the Calder main track between races three and four.

Those in attendance will also have an opportunity to win a $100 mutuel voucher as part of a drawing that will take place in conjunction with the running of the Princess Rooney. Entrants must first correctly select the winner of the Princess Rooney, and from that pool five vouchers will be awarded. Entries can be picked up at the TSC Elite Players Club on the second floor of the grandstand and must be deposited by 3 p.m. on race day. The drawing will take place after the Princess Rooney is declared official.

Calder will also be making two donations to industry charities on Summit of Speed day, with a check for $25,000 to be presented to the Florida Thoroughbred Retirement & Adoptive Care (TRAC) program, and an additional $25,000 to be given to FHBPA Charities.

HRTV will be onsite to cover the Summit of Speed, while the Horse Racing Radio Network (HRRN) will provide live coverage trackside. A special one-hour Summit of Speed Big Event chat will take place Thursday, July 5, starting at 8:30 p.m. hosted by Horseplayer Now and featuring Calder track announcer Bobby Neuman.

Conceived in 2000, the Summit of Speed has produced a long line of Breeders’ Cup and Eclipse Award winners, including the likes of Awesome Feather, Benny the Bull, Big Drama, and Lost in the Fog. That streak of success continued in 2011 as Grade 1 Princess Rooney runner-up Musical Romance would use that race as a steppingstone to a Breeders’ Cup win and divisional honors.

The Summit of Speed includes the Princess Rooney, Smile Sprint, the Grade 3 $150,000 Azalea Stakes, the Grade 3 $150,000 Carry Back Stakes, the $100,000 Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint, and the $100,000 Hollywood Wildcat.
