Chasing Tails Stables LLC’s Starship Truffles bested a field of strong local contenders and an out-of-town favorite to take down the $350,000 Grade I Princess Rooney Handicap in the Summit of Speed at Calder Casino & Race Course on Saturday.
“I’m so excited,” said winning jockey Edgard Zayas. “I know it’s the first one of a lot of them.”
The 4-year-old daughter of Ghostzapper tracked the pace briefly, but began to make her move as she entered the turn. By the stretch, Starship Truffles was 3-lengths clear of the approaching favorite Judy the Beauty, who was unable to close that gap after being caught in a tight start.
“I laid in third like planned,” said Zayas. “I was very confident in my horse; she is doing very, very good.”
As one of five Marty Wolfson-trained horses entered into the Princess Rooney, Starship Truffles performed as expected from the veteran trainer.
“She’s a late closer and always makes a move at the three-eighths pole,” said Wolfson. “Personally, I really did (think she would draw off). We ran her a week ago to make sure she was back to herself.”
On June 8, Starship Truffles finished a disappointing sixth in the U Can Do It Handicap. Wolfson chalked that performance up to the weather.
“It was a hot day,” said Wolfson. “She had some problems and wasn’t ridden properly so I ran her a week ago to see where she was at.”
In a $6,250 starter allowance on June 29, Starship Truffles was back in familiar form.
“She ran in 1:04 (in 5 ½ furlongs) - you can run anywhere (with that time), and then he turned her loose. I knew she would open up today. My other filly (Spectacular Sky) didn’t break good; it’s tough to watch five horses.”
With her win, Starship Truffles added a 14th win to her now 24 starts (11 for 16 at Calder) and boosted her career earnings to $433,035.
Starship Truffles returned $18.60, $7.20, and $5.40 for the win. Judy the Beauty paid $2.80 and $2.60 for second, and My Pal Chrisy returned $10.20 for third.
Completing the order of finish were Holiday Soiree, Sweet Cassiopeia, French Politics, Centrique, Givhans Ferry, Oh Carole, Spectacular Sky, Capitalism at Risk, and Costly.
