Saturday's Three Grade III Stakes Draw Large Fields

Three Grade III stake races, two scheduled for the turf and one set for the dirt, drew loaded fields for Saturday at Calder Casino & Race Course.

The Grade III $100,000 Tropical Turf Handicap for 3-year-olds and up, and the Grade III $100,000 My Charmer Handicap for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up, are both listed for 1 1/8 on the turf, while the Grade III $100,000 Fred W. Hooper Handicap for 3-year-olds and up, will be run on the main track at 1 1/8 mile.

GRADE III $100,000 TROPICAL TURF HANDICAP

Turf experience abounds among the 12 entrants for the Tropical Turf Handicap.

Last year’s Tropical Turf winner, Brushwood Stable’s Philly Ace, looks for back-to-back victories in the stakes. He captured the 2012 Tropical Turf by coming with a ½-length victory under a patient ride. This year’s appearance in the Tropical Turf marks Philly Ace’s first race in 2013. Robert Leibner’s Bad Debt has stakes-winning experience at Calder as well, having back-to-back wins in the 1 1/8-mile Bonnie Heath Turf Cup Handicap in 2011-2012. He became graded stakes placed with a third-place finish in May in the 1-mile Grade III Red Bank Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Moyglare Stud Farm, Ltd.’s Speaking of Which’s best graded stakes finish in the United States was in November 2012 in his first appearance here. He finished second by a ½ length in the 1 1/8-mile Grade II Twilight Derby at Santa Anita Park.

Merriebelle Stable’s Paris Vegas’ best graded stakes finish came with a second-place result by 2 lengths in the Grade II 1 1/16-mile Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga Race Course in August. Wachtel Stable’s Tetradrachm became graded stakes-placed two starts ago when he finished third in the Bernard Baruch. He most recently ran fourth in the Grade III 1 1/8-mile Knickerbocker Stakes at Belmont Park in October, whereas Paris Vegas finished eighth.

Silverton Hill LLC's Heiko became a stakes winner in September when he took the 1 1/16-mile The Vid Stakes at Gulfstream Park by ¾ of a length. Kenneth L. and Sarah K. Ramsey’s Live in Joy’s best stakes result came with a win in the 1-mile Capital City Stakes at Penn National Race Course in 2011. Phipps Stable’s Reflecting became stakes-placed two starts ago when he finished second, 1 1/8 length behind, in the 1 1/8-mile PTHA President's Cup Stakes at Parx Racing in September. Groupo 7C Racing Stable’s Grand Tito’s best stakes finish came when he dead-heated for the win in the 1 1/16-mile Showing Up Stakes at Gulfstream in July.

Green Lantern Stables LLC’s Exothermic makes his stakes debut in the Tropical Turf. Bruce Hollander & Cary Shapoff’s Csaba and Lisa's Racing, Inc.’s Ducduc are listed as main track only participants.

The Tropical Turf kicks off the stakes action on the card as the sixth race with an approximate post time of 3 p.m.

GRADE III $100,000 FRED W. HOOPER HANDICAP

The Fred W. Hooper Handicap drew a total of 10 entries.

Last year’s co-winners of the Fred W. Hooper, Bruce Hollander & Cary Shapoff’s Csaba and Lisa's Racing, Inc.’s Ducduc, return for a rematch of the Fred W. Hooper after dead-heating in the 2012 running. While Ducduc has yet to win a stakes race since the Fred W. Hooper, Csaba has won three stakes. He won the 1 1/16-mile Harlan’s Holiday Stakes at Gulfstream last December before taking the 1-mile Grade III Hal’s Hope Stakes at Gulfstream in January. He also captured the 1 1/16-mile Memorial Handicap at Calder in May.

DDRD Racing, Inc.’s Sr. Quisqueyano’s best graded stakes finish came at Calder in the Grade III 6-furlong Carry Back Stakes in July, where he finished third. He beat Csaba in the 1 1/16-mile Quality Road Stakes by 2 ¼ lengths at Gulfstream in October two starts ago. Rose Family Stable’s Joshua’s Comprise came third in the Quality Road. His best graded stakes result came with a fourth-place finish in the 1 1/16-mile Grade III Holy Bull Stakes in January, where Sr. Quisqueyano finished eighth.

Roman Hill Farm LLC’s I'm Steppin' It Up’s only graded stakes appearance came back in 2010 in the 1-mile Grade I Champagne Stakes at Belmont, where he ran third. His most recent stakes victory was in August 2012 in the 1-mile Eight Thirty Stakes at Delaware Park. Miroslava Dorochenko’s Macho Bull’s best graded stakes result came in June 2012, where he finished third in the Grade III Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows Race Track.

Maestre Racing Stable’s Twin’s best stakes finish came back in 2011, when he finished second in the 1 1/16-mile In Reality division of the Florida Stallion Stakes Series. Crossed Sabres Farm’s Valid’s only graded stakes appearance came in February at Aqueduct, where he finished seventh in the 1 1/16-mile Grade III Withers Stakes. Bisnath Parboo’s Notimetokill’s only stakes appearance came at Gulfstream in July, where he came seventh in the 1 1/16-mile Armed Forces Stakes on the turf.

High Point Thoroughbred Partners’ On the Loose Again makes his stakes debut in the Fred W. Hooper.

The Fred W. Hooper has an approximate post time of 3:30 p.m. as the seventh race.

GRADE III $100,000 MY CHARMER HANDICAP

The My Charmer Handicap drew a field of 12 entries.

Kathleen Amaya & Raffaele Centofanti’s Rose to Gold returns to the races with a start in the My Charmer for the first time since appearing in the Grade I Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs in May, where she ran eighth. She has three Grade III victories on her resume: the Grade III 1-mile Delta Downs Princess Stakes at Delta Downs in November 2012, and the 1 1/16-mile Grade III Honeybee Stakes in March and the 1 1/16-mile Grade III Fantasy Stakes in April, both at Oaklawn Park. Caroline A. Forgason’s Somali Lemonade has two Grade III wins in her career. She won the 1 1/16-mile Grade III Jessamine Stakes on the turf at Keeneland Race Course in 2011, and she took the 1 1/16-mile Dr. James Penny Memorial Handicap on the turf at Parx in July.

Andrew Stone’s Strathnaver was victorious in the 1 ½-mile Grade III Bewitch Stakes on the turf at Keeneland in April in just her second race appearance in the United States. She finished fourth in her most recent appearance in the 1 ½-mile Grade III Long Island Handicap on the turf at Aqueduct in November. Siena Farms LLC’s Alaura Michele’s best graded stakes finish came with a fifth-place result to Strathnaver in the Bewitch. Edward A. Cox, Jr.’s Naples Bay has one Grade III win in her career, which came in the 1-mile Grade III Noble Damsel Stakes on the turf at Belmont in September 2012.

Herman Van Den Broeck’s Angelica Zapata comes into the My Charmer on the heels of winning three stakes. Her most recent victory came by a length in the 1 1/16-mile Capano Handicap on the turf at Calder in November. Her best graded stakes finishes came with fourth-place results at Churchill in 2011: first in the 7-furlong Grade III Eight Belles Stakes and then in the 1-mile Grade III Dogwood Stakes. Lone Stable LLC’s Parranda is on a two-stakes race winning streak. Her most recent victory was in the 1 1/16-mile Millions Filly and Mare Turf Preview Stakes on the turf at Gulfstream in November. She ran fifth in her only graded stakes appearance, which was in the 1-mile Grade III Matchmaker Stakes at Monmouth in July.

Kenneth L. and Sarah K. Ramsey’s Awesome Flower became graded stakes-placed in her most recent start, the Grade II Chilukki Stakes at Churchill in November. Dell Ridge Farm LLC’s Poetic Kid came fourth in the 1-mile Grade III Ontario Colleen Stakes on the turf at Woodbine Race Track in August 2012 in her only graded stakes appearance.

Brinkerhill Farm LLC’s Millennia’s best graded stakes finish came with a sixth-place result in the 1 1/16-mile Grade III Valley View Stakes on the turf at Keeneland back in 2010. Antoinette Oppenheimer’s Valiant Girl ran eighth in her only graded stakes race appearance in the United States in the Grade I Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes at Belmont in September. Augustin Stable’s Coup finished tenth in her graded stakes appearance, which came at Churchill in June 2012 in the 1 1/8-mile Grade III Regret Stakes on the turf.

Stonestreet Stables LLC’s Arriba Anna is a main track only entrant; while Chasing Tail Stables’ Ann of the Dance, Lewis Schaffel, Jim Collins and Joel Schwartz’s Team, and Miller Racing LLC’s Sure Route are also-eligibles.

The My Charmer closes out the stakes action on the card as the eighth race with an approximate post time of 4 p.m.
