J Kirk and Judy Robison’s Mico Margarita stalked the pace and opened up on the field in the stretch to win the $100,000 Grade III Carry Back Stakes in the Summit of Speed at Calder Casino and Race Course on Saturday.

“I knew my horse had a chance; my horse is a nice horse,” said winning jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr.

The 3-year-old colt sat comfortably in third for most of the race while R Free Roll and Rockyshomerun battled for the lead. At the 1/8 pole, Mico Margarita and jockey Ricard Santana, Jr drew away from the pack to take the 4 1/2-length victory over Red Rocket Express, who edged out Sr. Quisqueyano by a nose.

“The horse on the rail (favorite R Free Roll) broke bad but he got where he needed to be,” said winning assistant trainer Scott Blasi. “Ricardo got into good position and our horse is improving. It set up perfectly for him. He’s a rapidly improving horse; there will be exciting races in his future.”

“I knew there were going to be a lot of tough horses, but I knew my horse was tough, too,” said Santana.

The locally-trained post-time favorite R Free Roll finished in fifth.

“Didn’t see anything in particular that made him break bad,” said Ralph Ziadie, trainer of R Free Roll. “Just being in post one. He had to use him pretty hard and didn’t have enough. One of those days.”

Mico Margarita returned $9.20, $4.60, and $5.00 for the win. Red Rocket Express paid $15.00 and $8.40 as the runner-up, and Sr. Quisqueyano paid $4.60 to show.

Completing the order of finish was Gotta Be Fate, R Free Roll, City of Weston, and Rockyshomerun.
