In what Director of Poker Chris Trabue described as a “statistical fluke,” Studz Poker Club at Calder Casino & Race Course paid out its second Super Bad Beat of the year on Saturday, June 19, just ten days after one hit on June 9.
A "Bad Beat" in poker happens when a seemingly unbeatable hand loses to a better hand. Saturday's jackpot was triggered when a straight flush beat four of a kind. In the case of a bad beat, it's actually better to be the loser; the payout structure gives 50 percent to the loser of the hand, 30 percent to the winner of the hand, and 20 percent is divided among the remaining players at the table.
The $104,653 Bad Beat hit late Saturday night, after an already exciting day of poker action. Studz had all 29 tables filled for most of the early afternoon, due to the $10,000 Guaranteed Tournament which drew a field of 190 players, as well as the $10,000 High Hand Saturdays promotion, which pays $1,000 every other hour for the high hand. Ian J. of Hollywood won $52,327 for having the losing hand of four 9's, and Nikkera G. of Opa Locka won $31,398 for having the winning hand - a straight flush to the nine. The remaining eight players each took home $2,616 for just being at the table.
