A deep field of experienced horses was drawn to the $50,000 Kaiser Handicap, slated for 5 furlongs on the turf for 3 year olds and up this Saturday at Calder Casino & Race Course.

Jason DaCosta’s Silver Cloud earned his first career stakes victory by a head in the 5-furlong Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint Stakes at Calder during the Summit of Speed in July. He has not run since finishing second by 1 ½ lengths to Ron Marano’s Determinato in a 5-furlong allowance on the turf at Calder on August 16. Determinato comes into the Kaiser on a two-race winning streak at Calder. He most recently scored victory by 1 ¼ lengths over Kick Start Farm LLC’s Mel Beach in a 5-furlong allowance on September 21 that was taken off the turf. Determinato has not won a stakes race since his first career stakes victory that came early in 2011 in the Spectacular Bid Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Mel Beach returns to stakes action for the first time in more than two years with his appearance in the Kaiser. Mel Beach’s last stakes appearance came in the Birdonthewire Stakes at Calder in 2011, where he finished fifth. His only stakes victory came in the Frank Gomez Memorial Stakes at Calder that same year. Maurice Miller LLC’s Uno Caliente is winless in 2013 in four starts, with one third-place finish to Determinato in the August 16 allowance. He took the Champali Stakes at Calder in 2012 and the Birdonthewire Stakes at Calder in 2010.

Samuel H. Rogers, Jr.’s Close It Out already has one stakes win this year with his victory in the Champali Stakes at Calder in May. The multiple stakes winner also has two second-place stakes finishes this year, one in the Ponche Handicap in June and most recently in the Housebuster Stakes at Gulfstream in August. Natalie and Rowan Dixon’s Rockyshomerun earned his first career stakes win in August at Delaware Park in the 5 ½-furlong Hard Spun Stakes on the dirt. He most recently finished fourth in a 5-furlong allowance race on the dirt on September 21 at Calder.

Patricia A. Generazio’s Wicked Tune comes into the Kaiser off of an 11th place-finish in the Grade III Turf Monster Handicap at Parx Racing in September. Wicked Tune is a two-time winner of the My Frenchman Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Averill Racing LLC’s Stat makes his first stakes appearance in 2013 in the Kaiser. The lightly raced Stat came second in the Grade II Saratoga Special Stakes in 2011 and finished fifth in the Grade I Arkansas Derby in 2012. He most recently won a 6-furlong allowance optional claiming race at Calder on the dirt in September.

Donald R. Dizney’s Apriority is still in search of his first victory in almost two years after going winless since his victory in the Grade III Mr. Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream in December 2011. After three starts in California earlier this year, Apriority returned to Florida and has finished off-the-board in two starts since.

Acclaimed Racing Stable’s Trev and Starship Stables’ Starship Wildcat make their stakes debuts in the Kaiser. IAB Stables’ County Gun and Lady Luck Stable, Louis Morici and Aventura Stable’s Loveyouallthetime are listed as main track only participants for the Kaiser.

The Kaiser is scheduled as the eighth race with an approximate post time of 4 p.m. Post time for the first race at Calder is 12:30 p.m.
