Stride Rite Racing Stable, Inc.’s Frolic’s Revenge, winner of the $100,000 Calder Oaks at Calder Casino & Race Course in her last start, will look to secure her second straight stake on Saturday when sent forth as the likely favorite in the $55,000 Regal Gal, a one-mile contest that has drawn a field of eight sophomore fillies.
Trained by Milt Wolfson, Frolic’s Revenge switches surfaces for the Regal Gal, moving from the turf course to the main track. The filly boasts a record of two wins from five starts on the Calder dirt, including a victory in last year’s $63,000 Lindsay Frolic, which was run at the distance of one mile. The daughter of Vindication also broke her maiden over the local main track.
Assigned post two in the Regal Gal, Frolic’s Revenge will be ridden for the first time by Calder’s current leading rider Luis Saez.
Jacks or Better Farm, Inc.’s Awesome Belle, winner of last year’s $300,000 My Dear Girl Division of the Florida Stallion Stakes but winless in six starts as a sophomore, will look to end that disappointing dry spell when starting from post seven in the Regal Gal.
Two starts ago the Stanley Gold-trained daughter of Awesome of Course finished sixth to Frolic’s Revenge in the Calder Oaks and has since returned with a seventh-place performance when asked to shorten up to a six-furlong sprint for the $69,000 French Village.
Like Frolic’s Revenge, Awesome Belle will have a new pilot on Saturday as Jose Ferrer will board the filly for the first time in her 13-race career.
An intriguing entrant in the Regal Gal is Alex Lieblong’s Conway Two Step, a winner in each of her last two starts, although those outings date back to late summer 2011. The David Fawkes trainee broke her maiden while sprinting at Calder August 27, and then returned three weeks later to win the two-turn $90,000 Brave Raj Stakes on September 17, defeating Frolic’s Revenge.
Conway Two Step will be paired with Juan Leyva when starting from post one in her sophomore debut.
Completing the field for the Regal Gal is J D Farms’ Indy Crown, Kathleen Amaya and Raffaele Centofanti’s Topazio, Tracy Pinchin’s Sinister Brew, and the Luis Duco Stables, Inc.’s pair of Wild Kira and Criolla Linda.
Post time for the Regal Gal, which goes as the 11th race on a 12-race card, is scheduled for 5:26 p.m.
