Only four horses entered in Saturday’s $65,000 Calder Oaks at Calder Casino & Race Course have stakes experience, while the rest of the field makes their stakes debuts in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies.
Main Line Racing Stable’s Joint Return has appeared in just two stakes. She scored her first stakes victory in her first try in the 1 1/16-mile Busher Stakes at Aqueduct Race Track in February. The win in the Busher was Joint Return’s third career victory in a row after breaking her maiden in a 1-mile maiden special weight at Parx Racing last November and a 1-mile allowance at Parx in January. She most recently came fifth in the Grade II Gulfstream Oaks at Gulfstream Park in March. Bobby Flay’s Fierce Boots has run in four stakes in her career out of seven career starts and has one stakes victory from those starts, which came in the 1 mile-70 yard Busanda Stakes at Aqueduct in January. Her other career victory came in a 1-mile maiden special weight race at Parx Racing last August.
Jerome G. Bozzo Trust’s Flutterby is the only horse entered in the Calder Oaks that already has a stakes win at Calder. Out of four Calder stakes appearances, Flutterby has won once, which came in the 5 ½-furlong Cut The Charm Stakes last November. Her only other victory came in a 6-furlong maiden special weight race at Calder last September in her second career start.
Timothy S. O’Toole’s Fast Betty Blue has made just one stakes appearance in her career. She finished ninth in the 7-furlong Gasparilla Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in January. She comes into the Oaks off of a 1-mile allowance optional claiming win at Gulfstream in March. Her other career victory came first time out in a 6-furlong maiden special weight race at Indiana Race Course.
The remaining five horses entered in the Oaks are all making their stakes debuts.
Mari H. George’s Her Special Way heads into the Oaks on a two-race winning streak. She captured a 6-furlong allowance at Calder in March after breaking her maiden in a 7-furlong maiden special weight race at Calder in February. Sunshine Thoroughbred Corp.’s Dream Come True comes into the Oaks off of a victory in a 1-mile allowance optional claiming race at Calder in March. She also won a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight race at Calder last November.
Elena Racing, Inc.’s White Legend has just one win to her name, which came in a 1 mile-70 yard maiden special weight race at Calder in March. White Hall Lane Farm’s Faith Hall also has only one win on her record, which came at Calder last December in a 7-furlong maiden special weight race. All American Horses LLC’s Florida Sun comes into the Oaks off of a 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight victory at Calder in March.
