Calder Casino & Race Course has canceled the seven stakes races comprising the 2014 Summit of Speed as a result of the pending race dates agreement with Gulfstream Park.
The seven canceled stakes races originally carded for Saturday, July 5 are the $80,000 JJ’s Dream, the $80,000 Frank Gomez Memorial, the $150,000 Grade III Azalea Stakes, the $150,000 Grade III Carry Back Stakes, the $300,000 Grade II Princess Rooney Handicap, the $300,000 Grade II Smile Sprint Handicap, and the $100,000 Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint.
Conceived in 2000, the Summit of Speed has produced a long line of Breeders’ Cup and Eclipse Award winners, including the likes of Awesome Feather, Benny the Bull, Big Drama, and Lost in the Fog. That streak of success continued in 2011 as Grade 1 Princess Rooney runner-up Musical Romance would use that race as a steppingstone to a Breeders’ Cup win and divisional honors.
“The Summit of Speed has been the cornerstone of the Calder meet for over a decade,” said Vice President and General Manager of Racing John Marshall. “We are optimistic that these top sprint races will return to the Thoroughbred racing scene in the future.”
Live racing continues at Calder Friday through Sunday with a 12:55 p.m. first post.
