When Elena Arocha’s Backseat Memories and Groupo 7C Racing Stable’s Grand Tito face off in this Saturday’s $75,000 Naked Greed Stakes at Calder Casino & Race Course, there will be more on the line for the 3-year-old colts than just the stakes score.
A win in the Naked Greed by either colt will settle a personal battle between the two that began two weekends ago at Gulfstream Park when they left the track with a shared victory. The pair hit the wire together in the Showing Up Stakes, which was run at 1 1/16-miles on the turf, after battling back-and-forth down the stretch. The Naked Greed is run at 7 ½-furlongs on the turf and is restricted to 3-year-olds. Fernando Jara retains the mount aboard Backseat Memories, who is trained by Humberto Toledo, while Jilver Chamafi keeps the mount aboard Grand Tito, who is trained by Antonio Sano. They will break next to each other with Grand Tito in post six and Backseat Memories in post seven.
Backseat Memories is no stranger to the Calder winner’s circle after having won three straight races earlier in the meet which included a conquering of the Mambo Meister Stakes by ¾-lengths in April. He is 6-for-11 lifetime. Grand Tito just began his racing career at Calder in April but is already 2-for-4 with one second-place finish. He broke his maiden by 1 ¼-lengths in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight race at Calder prior to making his stakes debut in the Showing Up.
Lone Stable LLC’s Boy of Summer won the Journeyman Stud Sophomore Turf Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in April in his stakes debut, but finished seventh in both the Mambo Meister and the Showing Up in his only other stakes appearances since. Vivi Serena’s Balino was stakes placed three straight times in her most recent races, finishing third in the Journeyman Stud Sophomore Turf before running second in the Mambo Meister, then third in the Armed Forces Stakes at Gulfstream.
Blackacre Farms, Inc.’s Gotta Be Fate, Herman Van Den Broeck’s Offlee Fast, Crossed Sabres Farm’s Midnight Cello, and A. Bianco Holding’s Dad’z Laugh all have stakes experience. Vicente Stella Stables LLC’s Statutorial, Fawkes Racing, Inc. & Sandra New’s Symphony Forty One, J D Farms’ Nova Light, and Crossed Sabres Farm’s Jay Eye See make their stakes debuts in the Naked Greed.
Secretariat Racing Stable’s El Gran Joyful and Teresa and David Palmer’s Livingston Swagger are listed as also-eligibles for the main track only.
The Naked Greed begins the stakes action on the card as the seventh race with an approximate post time of 3:32 p.m.
