Jacks or Better Farm's Awesome Feather notched her sixth victory without a loss with an easy win under jockey Jeffrey Sanchez in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies on Friday at Churchill Downs.
Trained by Stanley Gold, Awesome Feather won her five previous races at Calder Casino & Race Course. The streak included a sweep of the filly division of the Florida Stallion Stakes.
"I'm speechless," said Gold after the race. "I was confident that she was right and ready to run. Basically, I wanted to see if she could do this, and she didn't disappoint me. We hoped she could just keep climbing up the ladder, and she did.
"She's always been competitive and always seemed to get it done without getting to the bottom of the tank," continued Gold. "The last time we went two turns, which was her first two-turn race, she hit another gear, but she still looked like she had more. She seemed like she still had a lot in the tank, so we thought ‘Maybe, we have the real deal.'
"She's in the sale (Sunday's Fasig-Tipton November sale, hip number 10). I don't know if she'll be sold or they'll buy her back. We'll have to see," Gold said.
Awesome Feather was Gold's first Breeders' Cup starter. It was also the first Breeders' Cup mount for jockey Jeffrey Sanchez.
After the race, Sanchez said, "I waited and waited with my filly. I wanted to make one move with her. When I asked her, she went. Then, when we got in the stretch with that other filly (R Heat Lightning) and when she bumped us, my filly tried harder. She came away from that other filly. I love this filly. The first time I rode her, I told everyone that this was a champion filly. Now she is a champion filly."
