Angelica Zapata and Canadian Mistress Set for Nancy's Glitter Showdown

Herman Van Den Broeck’s Angelica Zapata and Miller Racing, LLC’s Canadian Mistress, separated by a neck at the wire following a spirited stretch duel in last month’s $55,000 Emergency Nurse Stakes, will renew their budding rivalry on Saturday in the $75,000 Nancy’s Glitter Handicap, run over 1 1/16 miles of Calder Casino & Race Course dirt.

Trained by Ron Pellegrini, Angelica Zapata had prevailed just two times in her first 15 career starts, but the homebred daughter of Sharp Humor has doubled that win total over the last eight weeks, piecing together consecutive victories in the Emergency Nurse and the $55,000 Sara’s Success, both run on the Calder main track, where the filly remains unbeaten.

Assigned the top weight in the Nancy’s Glitter at 121 pounds, Angelica Zapata will begin her 1 1/16-mile journey from post two, with Jose Ferrer scheduled to ride.

Canadian Mistress enters Saturday’s tilt winless in six seasonal starts, but the filly has competed almost exclusively in difficult events through the first half of 2012, including a fourth-place finish in the Grade 3 Sabin in February where she finished behind a trio of Eclipse Award contenders in Awesome Maria, Royal Delta, and Groupie Doll.

The Marty Wolfson trainee followed that effort with a third-place performance in the Grade 3 Rampart, and prior to her tough defeat in the Emergency Nurse, the daughter of Canadian Frontier crossed the wire fourth in the Grade 3 Allaire DuPont Distaff at Pimlico.

Scheduled to carry 118 pounds to the post, the speedy Canadian Mistress has drawn post one for the Nancy’s Glitter and will be ridden for the first time by local leading rider Luis Saez.

Wolfson will also be represented by the lone 3-year-old in the Nancy’s Glitter field, Silverton Hill, LLC’s rapid developer Sister Pippa. The daughter of Dixie Union had failed to hit the board in the first three starts of her career but is unbeaten in two starts on the local dirt since moving to her current barn this spring.

With jockey Saez, who was aboard Sister Pippa for her two recent wins, opting to ride Canadian Mistress, the filly will team with Joe Rodriguez from post five in the Nancy’s Glitter.

An intriguing entrant in Saturday’s race is Randy Bradshaw, Corey Johnson, and Doug Donnelly’s Go Go Lolo, a daughter of Awesome Again that hasn’t started since a mid-September allowance victory at Parx Racing.

Trained by Bradshaw, Go Go Lolo finished fourth in her only previous stakes attempt, the $75,000 Proud Spell at Saratoga last summer. The filly will start from post seven on Saturday and will be ridden by Fernando Jara.

Completing the field for the Nancy’s Glitter is Tonys Investments, LLC’s My Pal Chrisy, a two-time stakes winner at Calder last year with victories in the $150,000 Elmer Huebeck Distaff and the $75,000 Stage Door Betty; Maestre Racing Stable’s Mae Ruler, a four-length winner two starts ago that exits a second-place allowance run; and Vicino Racing Stables, Inc. and Bill Kaplan’s Annie Roe, a winner in three of her last four Calder main track starts.

The Nancy’s Glitter Handicap is scheduled to go as the 11th race on a 12-race Saturday program with an approximate post time of 5:26 p.m. First race post time is 12:55 p.m.
