Two stakes races for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up are the feature for Saturday’s racing card at Calder Casino & Race Course.
$50,000 CAPANO HANDICAP
A full field of 12 was entered for the Capano, which is scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the turf.
Herman Van Den Broeck’s Angelica Zapata is no stranger to Calder stakes. In 2012, she won four-straight Calder stakes races – the 1-mile off-the-turf Sara’s Success Stakes, the 1 mile-70 yards Emergency Nurse Stakes, the 1 1/16-mile Nancy’s Glitter Handicap, and the 1 1/16-mile Stage Door Betty Handicap. She won the stakes by an approximate 18 lengths combined. After running fourth in the 6-furlong U Can Do It Handicap at Calder on June 8, Angelica Zapata returned to come third in the 7 ½-furlong Hollywood Wildcat Stakes on the turf at Calder on July 6. She went to the winner’s circle two starts ago at Calder in the 1-mile Nancy’s Glitter Handicap, taking the race by ¾ of a length on July 20. She most recently won the Wasted Tears Stakes at Gulfstream Park on August 31 by 1 ¼ lengths.
Chasing Tail Stables LLC’s Ann of the Dance finished second to Angelica Zapata in the Wasted Tears. She went into the race off of a fourth-place finish in the 7 ½-furlong Hollywood Wildcat Stakes on the turf at Calder on July 6.
Lewis Schaffel, Jim Collins and Joel Schwartz’s Team came third to Angelica Zapata in her most recent stakes appearance in the Wasted Tears. Prior to the Wasted Tears, Team scored back-to-back fourth-place stakes finishes and had a seventh-place stakes finish.
Kenneth L. and Sarah K. Ramsey’s Sisterhood has only one stakes victory on her resume but is multiple-stakes placed. Back in 2011, she earned her first career stakes victory with a win in the La Senorita Stakes at Retama Park. This April, Sisterhood came second by just a neck in the 1 1/16-mile Grade III Doubledogdare Stakes at Keeneland Race Course. She finished second in the 1 1/8-mile Grade III Arlington Matron Stakes at Arlington Park in May. She most recently tired to tenth in the 1 1/8-mile Grade I Spinster Stakes at Keeneland on October 6.
Maxxam Alliance LLC, JRR & PRR Group LLC and Fawkes Racing Inc.’s Glamour N Glory returns to stakes action for the first time in 2013 with the Capano. In 2012, she finished second in back-to-back stakes races. First, she came second by just a nose in the 1 1/16-mile Calder Oaks on the turf in her stakes debut. She followed that up with another second place finish, 1 ½ lengths behind, in the 1-mile Little Silver Stakes on the turf at Monmouth Park. She most recently came sixth in a 1 mile-70 yards turf allowance at Kentucky Downs on September 18.
Goodwood Racing II’s Swear Me In has made only one stakes appearance prior to the Capano. She crossed the wire first in the 1-mile Secret Grace Stakes on the turf at Gulfstream on March 31 but then was disqualified and placed third. On September 1, she won a 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claiming race on the turf at Monmouth by 2 ¾ lengths and most recently finished fifth in a 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claiming race on the turf at Delaware Park on October 3.
Miller Racing LLC’s Sure Route (GB) is still in search of her first career stakes victory. In four stakes appearances this year alone, Sure Route has hit the board just once with a second-place finish in the Mariensky Stakes at Belmont Park in June. She most recently came fifth in the 6 ½-furlong Musical Romance Stakes at Gulfstream on September 21. Champion Racing LLC’s Miss Montreal has only hit the board once in three stakes appearances this year. She finished second by a neck in the Hollywood Wildcat Stakes ahead of Angelica Zapata on July 6. She most recently finished fifth in the 1 1/16-mile Wasted Tears Stakes on the turf at Gulfstream on August 31.
Performance Thoroughbred Partners’ Channel Eleven came fourth in her only career stakes appearance, which came in the Judy’s Red Shoes Stakes at Calder on September 14. She recently finished fourth in a 1-mile allowance optional claiming race on the turf at Calder on October 18. Kathleen Amaya & Raffaele Centofanti’s Topazio became stakes-placed last year in the 1-mile Regal Gal Stakes at Calder when she came second in her stakes debut. She finished second in the allowance race in which Channel Eleven came third. In May, Topazio was seventh in her only stakes appearance this year in the 1 1/16-mile off-the-turf Mairzy Doates Stakes at Calder.
S.J.T. Racing Stables, LLC’s La De Andrea (VEN) has no race history listed for 2013, although she has had a string of workouts listed at Gulfstream this year. Miller Racing LLC’s Malibu Red makes her stakes debut in the Capano.
The Capano is listed as the eighth race with an approximate post time of 4 p.m.
$50,000 BOLD WORLD HANDICAP
Nine fillies and mares were entered for the Bold World, which is set for 6 furlongs on the main track.
Averill Racing LLC and Silver Oak Stable LLC’s R Free Roll ventured north for her most recent start in the 7-furlong Charles Town Oaks at Charles Town Racetrack on September 21. She finished second, 2 ¾ lengths behind. One race prior, she faded to fifth against the boys in the 6-furlong Grade III Carry Back Stakes at Calder on July 6. R Free Roll scored her only career stakes victory at Calder on June 8, where she cruised home in the 6-furlong Unbridled Stakes against the boys, dominating by 6 ¾ lengths.
Cindy Nassal’s Appealing Stella has appeared strictly in stakes races in 2013. She finished second in her most recent start, finishing 2 lengths behind in the 6 ½-furlong Musical Romance Stakes at Gulfstream Park on September 21. She earned her only stakes victory last year in the 6-furlong Minaret Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs by 1 ¼ lengths.
Farnsworth Stables, LLC’s Centrique has two third-place finishes in stakes races at Calder this year. She came third in the 6 ½-furlong Musical Romance Stakes on April 20 and ran third in the Nancy’s Glitter on July 20.
Equus Racing Stable LLC and New Life Stable Inc.’s Isabelle’s Thunder is still in search of her first stakes win. She most recently finished seventh in the Musical Romance and second in the Paseana Stakes at Gulfstream. Earlier this year, she came fourth in the Musical Romance at Calder. Miller Racing LLC’s Bringingdown Babel makes her third-straight stakes appearance as well with the Bold World.
Terry E. Davie’s Lets Go Donna makes just her third career stakes appearance with the Bold World. She has not run in a stakes race since March 2012. She’s going into the Bold World on a four-race winning streak, which consists of a victory in a claiming race and three-straight starter allowance races. Maurice Miller LLC’s Tillie the Tigress returns to stakes action for the first time since 2009. She has only one victory so far this year from seven starts, which came by ¾ of a length in a 5-furlong allowance optional claiming race on the turf at Calder on August 16.
Connie Scanlon and Kelly Warhurst’s Pure Legacy and Peachtree Stable’s Heart Stealer make their stakes debuts in the Bold World.
The Bold World kicks off the stakes action as the seventh race and has an approximate post time of 3:35 p.m.
