Black Eyed Susan
Friday May 16
BLACK-EYED SUSAN
One of Pimlico's oldest stakes races, the Black-Eyed Susan was first run at Pimlico in 1919 as the Pimlico Oaks. The name was changed in 1952 to compliment the Preakness Stakes and to acknowledge the Maryland state flower. The Black-Eyed Susan is recognized as the middle jewel of the "traditional" filly Triple Crown, which includes the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs and the Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park. The mile and one-eighth test for three-year-old fillies is traditionally run the day before the Preakness.
Only three fillies have won the filly Triple Crown including Wistful in 1949, Real Delight in 1952 and Davona Dale in 1979, all owned and bred by Calumet Farm. Calumet Farm also holds the record for having bred and owned the most Black-Eye Susan winners with six.
In addition to the Black-Eyed Susan, Pimlico Race Course features four other stakes races for fillies and mares, including the Grade II Allaire duPont Breeders’ Cup Distaff and the Grade III Adena Stallions’ Miss Preakness.
